William H. Hansen
March 9, 1942 - July 20, 2021
William “Bill” H. Hansen was a loving, caring, brother, uncle, friend and long-term life partner to Virginia. He was born on March 9, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. Bill was part of the graduating class of 1960 from Shawnee Mission North High School. Bill received his undergraduate and Juris Doctorate degrees from the University of Kansas. His time spent at the university was an experience that made a lasting impression upon him for the many, many, many years he spent there. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
After school, Bill found his niche in the newspaper business. Bill worked for The New York Times on both coasts of the United States at papers from Santa Rosa, California to the position of publisher in Bradenton, Florida. His keen insight and unconventional humor and wisdom served him well over his 30+ years in the print business.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, William Hansen Sr., his mother, Lucille Hansen, and his Aunt Ellinore Goodrick. He is survived by his loving partner of 20 years, Virginia Surina, a brother, Rick and his wife Linda, nephew Greg and his wife Amy, nephew Andy and wife Tammy, and his great-nieces and nephew, Kylie, Addison, Madison, Mason William, Emma, and Isabella. Bill’s life-long love for animals never ceased, and he leaves behind his two beloved Coton de Tulears, Woofer and Amelie.
Bill’s wishes were to be cremated and his ashes spread in Lawrence, Kansas. There are no public services planned. Bill was especially interested in the welfare of animals, and if you would like to make a donation in his honor, please consider supporting your local animal shelter.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Cremation Society of Charlotte
