Wayne Edgar Thomas II, born November 28, 1945, passed away on May 16, 2026. He was born in Lansing, Michigan, where he attended public school and distinguished himself in both track and football. He later earned his bachelor’s degree through Alabama University, beginning a life marked by dedication, discipline, and service.
Wayne proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Ticonderoga aircraft carrier and later the Reserves. Following his military service, he built a long and accomplished career with IBM, where he worked for 40 years as a computer programmer. He was also a Mason and gave generously of his time and talents to organizations he cared deeply about, serving as past treasurer of the Rowan Doll Society and the Schoenhut Collectors Club, and as a past board member of the NC Museum of Dolls, Toys and Miniatures. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his commitment to family, and the steady example he set throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorene Thomas; his father, Wayne Thomas I; and his stepson, Charles McQuaid. He is survived by his wife, Helen Thomas, two sisters, Sheila Lamson and Karen Wilburn; his brother, Terry Thomas; his sons, Jeffry Thomas and Wayne A. Thomas; his daughter, Cathy Crawford; his daughter, Andrea Smith, and son-in-law, Matt Smith; his stepdaughter, Lisa Ruf; his stepson, Joseph McQuaid; as well as six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be held June 6th at Statesville Road Baptist Church, 4901 Statesville Road Charlotte NC,28269. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Via Hospice House, 11900 Vanstory Drive, Huntersville, NC 28078.
