Thomas Cloos Obituary

Indian Land, South Carolina

February 7, 1947 - March 11, 2024

Thomas Leo Cloos, 77, of Indian Land, SC, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on March 11, 2024, after a lengthy illness.

Tom was born on February 7, 1947, to Leo and Susan Cloos in Lackawanna, NY. After graduating from Bishop Timon High School in 1964, he studied Economics at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, and completed his degree in 1968.

After graduation, Tom enlisted as an officer in the Army and served 3 years including time in Vietnam, proudly representing his country. Upon completion of his service, he landed a job at Congoleum, where he continually advanced his career in the flooring industry. He then moved his young family to New Hampshire and led A.F. Fitzgerald's Floor and Tile in Woburn, MA for several decades.

Upon settling his family in Hudson, NH, he quickly became a respected fixture in the community as a coach and mentor. He could regularly be seen imploring a player to throw a proper bounce pass or run the pick-and-roll correctly, drawing up a special play for the last kid on the bench, or ordering a Corona (NFL) at the Post 48 Legion. If not, he was probably playing softball in the “Old Man's League”or at home rooting for the Buffalo Bills or Boston Red Sox.

In 2007, he retired and moved to South Carolina, again, and became a fixture of the Sun City community. He ran group trips, played some mean cards, and made friends everywhere he went. He met his loving wife, Cheryl Henry, there in 2017. They were married on June 19, 2021, in a lovely ceremony right in the community, where he welcomed into his family her two children and five wonderful grandchildren.

Anyone who knew Tom knew that his greatest source of pride was his four children and his 12 grandchildren. He was dedicated to their happiness, education, successes, sports, and other activities, and even donated to many charities on their behalf over the years.

Tom was predeceased by his mother, Susan, his father, Leo, and brother James. He is survived by his wife Cheryl Cloos, her son Matthew Henry (Lauren) of Charlotte, NC, her daughter Jillian Knicely (Justin), of Summerville, SC, her grandchildren Thomas, Samuel, Claire, Jack, and Jonah; his siblings Kathleen, and Michael, his children, Kim Keys (Jason), of Dublin, OH, Tom Cloos (Sarah), of Waxhaw, NC, Jennifer Bean (Andy) of Fripp Island, SC, Jeff Cloos (Shannon), of Wolfeboro, NH, their mother Kathy Cloos, and his beloved grandchildren Ryan Keys, Megan Keys, Ally Keys, Cameron Bean, Andrew Bean, Kyle Bean, Leah Cloos, Kelly Cloos, Curtis Cloos, Nathan Cloos, Brody Ferguson, and Mason Ferguson.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina-

There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 2 pm ET at The Lodge in Sun City, Indian Land, SC 29707.
