Sergeant Raymond Lowell Auten, U.S. Marines (Ret.), age 89, of Charlotte, NC passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026 at Atrium Health. He was born in New York but lived in Charlotte, NC, and was the son of the late Sam and Dawn Auten.
Ray proudly served his country, enlisting in the United States Marines in 1954.
Ray’s deepest passion was his love for animals. Over his lifetime, he rescued and provided a loving home to dozens of animals. His kindness extended to all living creatures, from wild birds to stray animals he would take in to nurse back to health.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn Helton; nephews, Ronnie McKinney and George McKinney; and great nephew, John Wayne McKinney. He is survived by his nieces Dawn Bryant (Greg) of Monroe, NC and Andrea Broome (Ric) of Charlotte, NC; and many great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 24, 2026 at 10 a.m. at Moores Chapel Church, where he was a member. A graveside service to celebrate his life will be held at 11 a.m. at Moores Chapel Church Cemetery in Charlotte.
The Auten Family have entrusted arrangements to Cremation Society of Charlotte.
