Concord, North Carolina
John L. Sullivan Jr., 80, of Concord, NC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. Born August 5, 1945, in North Carolina to the late John L. and Cleo Sullivan, John was a proud graduate of NC State University and a longtime engineer with IBM. He was proud of the numerous projects he led as a project manager and the resulting patents he earned. He grew up living in Florida & NC and spent his younger years helping his parents with their amusement park. Summers during college were spent at Carolina Beach running a family-owned lemonade stand on the boardwalk, Cleo’s Corner, named after his mother. He lived in Fort Lauderdale & Boca Raton, FL for most of his adult life. He loved being active and raising his two sons. After retirement, John embraced a new adventure in Costa Rica, where he lived for many cherished years. It was a place that he loved for its warm weather, natural beauty, and vibrant people. There he found joy in becoming fluent in Spanish, exploring the country (from its mountains to its beaches), playing poker, helping others, and developing a mountain-top property that he held close to his heart. John is survived by his sons, John L. Sullivan III (Kelly) and Brian Sullivan (Elyse); grandchildren Sean, Connor (their mother Kelly Martin), Rex, Tess, Nate, Kyle and Ben; his sister, Martha (Marty) Hubert (Richard); his nephews David Catchpole Jr (Tasha), Michael Fields and niece Kelly Hunter; and their children and numerous grandchildren. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his dedication to helping others, and his love of family. John will be cremated, with plans for a celebration of life to be announced at a later date.
