John Ellis Obituary

Matthews, North Carolina

April 21, 1938 - January 20, 2024

John Hunter Ellis, 85, of Matthews, NC, passed away on January 20, 2024. Born on April 21, 1938, in Kansas City, MO, John was a passionate and caring individual, known for his continual outreach to and encouragement of others. He was a true patriot, with great honor for God and his country. He held a great love for history and made it his mission to share his research and historical truths with friends and family. He was a follower of Jesus Christ and sought to allow his faith to influence his character, relationships, and family.

John is survived by his sons, Chris (Renee) Ellis and Britt (fiancé Maria) Ellis, and his sisters, Laurie (John) Richardson and Cathe Mathis. He will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Jordan Ellis, Joy (Drew) Snow, Darren Wheeler, Landon Wheeler, Stephen (Christine) Ellis, Hunter Ellis, Scott (Keeley) Ellis, and Brittany Ellis, as well as his 4 nieces (Cameron, Erin, Amy, Cedar), 3 great-nieces, and 5 great-nephews. Pop-Pop, as he was known by his family, also had multiple adoptive grandchildren (Dane, Dalton, Bri, Kayla, Emma) and great-grandchildren (Nate Jr., Marcus, Kennedy, Malik), all of whom will miss him. Additionally, he will be greatly missed by his lifelong friend of 83 years, Dallis (Cherry) Buice. John was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Hunter Ellis and Mabel Cotton Ellis, and his beloved wife, Joy Dixon Ellis.

John grew up in Atlanta, GA and graduated from North Fulton High School. He later pursued higher education at Georgia Tech and Georgia State University (GSU), graduating with a BA in Business from GSU. He also proudly served in the U.S. Air Force, where he exemplified dedication and honor. While his service in the USAF was brief, he was a "lifelong" serviceman, giving of his time and resources to numerous patriotic causes and the support of veterans (e.g., Veterans Heart Group, Marine Corp League, American Legion, southern heritage volunteer organizations).

Throughout his career, John held various roles, including Sales Representative, Founder and Co-Director of Sales Managers, Inc., and (as a second career) Postal Carrier. He was known for his strong work ethic, strong people skills, his integrity with customers, and commitment to customer service. He was a faithful provider for his family, always doing what was needed to support his wife, Joy, raising their sons in a loving home environment.

John always desired to exhibit his Christian faith through worship, service, and community. He was an active member and member of numerous ministries for over 45 years at Blair Road United Methodist Church and, since late-2023, The Road Church in Mint Hill.

A memorial service celebrating John's life will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 11:00am at Mill Grove Church in Indian Trail, NC. Prior to the service, the family will receive visitors starting at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Road Church of Mint Hill in John's honor.

John Hunter Ellis will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his loved ones.
