CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA
August 31, 1947 - February 28, 2026
Janey Correia Poorman, of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully in her home on February 28, 2026, at the age of 78.
Born on August 31, 1947, in Newport, RI, she was the beloved daughter of Alice and Manuel Correia. She married her husband, John Poorman, in 1975, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past year.
She earned two master's degrees in Reading and Language Arts and in Reading and Language Consultancy, working in teachers' classrooms assisting teachers with developing reading and writing programs for special needs students.
Janey dedicated over 35 years to teaching, inspiring countless young minds with her patience, kindness, and love of learning. Outside the classroom, she found joy in reading, playing bridge, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.
She visited many foreign shores including Australia, Tahiti, Bora Bora, France, Spain, Portugal, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Caribbean. She loved exploring and immersing herself in the culture and history of each place she visited.
Friends and family were at the center of her world. No matter the miles between them, she stayed connected with so many people who mattered to her. She built and nurtured cherished relationships across the country - from Massachusetts and Rhode Island to California, Texas, Las Vegas, Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, Illinois, Florida, and, of course, her beloved home in North Carolina.
She found the most pleasure in life becoming a grandmother to her 6 grandchildren - from playing board games, to attending sporting events and graduations, to simply reading with them, all brought her enormous joy.
Janey is survived by her loving husband, John Poorman, her daughter, Erin (Tom), stepsons, Mark (Maria), Todd (Shanna), and Scott (Cindy), and her cherished grandchildren, Henry (13), Walter (9), Hailey (26), Jena (23), Cole (18), and Ethan (18). She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Martha.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Please consider donating to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) or the Humane Society of Charlotte (https://www.humanesocietyofcharlotte.org) in her honor.
Though Janey's laughter and love will be profoundly missed, the light she brought into the world will be remembered always.
The Poorman Family have entrusted arrangements to Cremation Society of Charlotte.
