Carolyn Louise (Cripe) Setterland

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

June 16, 1943 - May 4, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Carolyn Setterland, aged 81, who peacefully departed this life on May 4, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Carolyn was born in Glendale, California on June 16th, 1943, to Robert and Ethel Cripe. She was born first in the family, followed by Jan Grizel, Larry Cripe and Beverly Dodson. Carolyn was raised in Glendale, California where she also attended Glendale Hoover High School. Carolyn graduated from Laverne College and received a degree in Education with the class of 1965. She spent her early years in the Golden State before relocating to Charlotte in 2022 to be closer to family in her later years.

A dedicated educator and loving mother, Carolyn devoted her life to nurturing young minds and fostering a love of learning. Her teaching career at Santa Ana Unified School District spanned over 31 years, during which she inspired countless students with her passion for learning. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom, as she was also a mentor and advocate for her colleagues and the broader educational community.

Carolyn is lovingly remembered by her children, Cheri Smith and David Setterland, and her cherished grandchildren: Heather Setterland, Dylan Smith, Marley Smith, and Kaitlyn Smith. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jan Grizel, and is survived by her siblings, Beverly Dodson and Larry Cripe.

Carolyn was raised in a Christian household, and she instilled these same values in her own family, guiding them with faith and compassion throughout her life. She had a deep passion for doll collecting, often attending doll shows and participating in club meetings, where she formed lasting friendships with fellow enthusiasts. Her love for nature was evident in her beautiful garden, where she found peace and joy tending to her plants and roses (favorite plant was African Violets and).

The family is forever grateful for all the thoughts, prayers, and support that has been given so graciously in our time of grieving.

The Setterland and Smith Family have entrusted arrangements to Cremation Society of Charlotte.
