Bryan Warman Jr. Obituary

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

September 13, 1935 - November 1, 2025

Bryan Warman, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, died peacefully in Davidson, NC on November 1, 2025 from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Born on September 13, 1935, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Bryan Warman and Mary Landis Warman, Bryan spent much of his childhood in Connecticut and Western New York. He graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, New York, with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics.

Bryan began his career in banking and insurance before joining IBM, where he spent more than 30 years specializing in market planning for banking industry products. He managed the introduction and marketing of check-processing technologies and received an Outstanding Contribution Award from IBM’s Chairman for initiating the first development of an online cash issue terminal—known today as the ubiquitous ATM. During his IBM career, he worked in offices in Los Gatos, California; Princeton, New Jersey; and Milford, Connecticut. After retirement, he settled first on the Chesapeake Bay and later in Lake Wylie, South Carolina, and Davidson, North Carolina.

An avid sailor from the age of nine, Bryan’s lifelong passion for sailing was one he joyfully shared with his children. He competed in dinghy and offshore racing and won numerous trophies across the country, including in the Great Lakes, Northern California, Long Island Sound, and Barnegat Bay. He served as a watch captain in the Newport-to-Bermuda Race and volunteered as an offshore sailing coach at the U.S. Naval Academy. Bryan was a member and past Commodore of Island Heights Yacht Club in Island Heights, New Jersey, and a member of The Corinthians and the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake. Along with his first wife, Judy, he sailed their Tartan 33 for years on Long Island Sound and the Chesapeake Bay, enjoying extended cruises as far as Maine and Florida.

Bryan was active in the Presbyterian Church (USA), as a member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park, Maryland, and as an Elder at Nassau Presbyterian Church in Princeton, New Jersey. He believed deeply in giving back to his community. His volunteer leadership included spearheading a shoreline improvement program in Milford, Connecticut; representing IBM on the board of the Milford Chamber of Commerce; and serving as Treasurer and board member of the Milford Mental Health Clinic. In Maryland, he served on the board of Arundel Habitat for Humanity.

In 2012, Bryan was proud to be the guest of honor at The City of Warman’s official incorporation ceremony. The city in Saskatchewan, Canada was named after his grandfather Cy Warman, author, journalist and poet who wrote extensively about the opening of the West through the railroad. Bryan took great interest in Cy, whom he’d never met, taking several research visits to Creede, Colorado where his grandfather founded The Creede Daily Chronicle and was affectionately known as the Poet of the Rockies.

Bryan was known for his warmth, optimism, and steady drive. He built strong bonds with his children and grandchildren through sailing, tennis and countless games of chess. His presence was defined by curiosity, kindness, and strength which inspired those around him.

He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Judith S. Warman, and his sister, Patricia W. Reynolds. Bryan is survived by his wife of 14 years, Linda Long Warman, and his children and their spouses: Bryan (Trey) Warman III and Angela Nichols; Marcia W. and John Shackelford; five grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews. Through his marriage to Linda, Bryan was also blessed with an extended family, including two stepdaughters and their spouses, Karen and David Kuntz, Joanne and Ken Lee, six step-grandchildren and one step-great granddaughter.

Contributions may be made in memory of Bryan to The Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, P.O. Box 49143, Baltimore, MD 21297-9143, or to the Parkinson’s Foundation, Carolinas Chapter, Attn: Donor Services, 200 SE 1st Street, Miami, FL 33131.

Bryan’s life was defined by curiosity, kindness, and an enduring love of wind and water. His steady hand on the helm, both in sailing and in life, will be remembered by all who knew him.
