Barbara Lorey Obituary

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

February 17, 1946 - February 9, 2020

Mrs. Barbara “Barbie” Ann Macenko Lorey, 73, left her earthly home on February 9, 2020, surrounded by her dearly loved family, to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, forever.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Grace Covenant Church, 17301 Statesville Road, Cornelius, NC 28031, at 1:00pm on Saturday, February 15, 2020 with Pastor Paul Turbedsky officiating.

Barbie was a native of Belle Valley, Ohio, and the daughter of the late Joseph Michael Macenko and Anna Irene Mizik Macenko.  She was preceded in death by her brother, Lawrence C. Macenko and wife Elaine, and brother-in-law, Bill Coleman.

After graduating from Shenandoah High School, Sarahsville, Ohio, Barbie worked for Nationwide Insurance and other companies in Columbus.  She then moved to Lancaster, Ohio, where she sold Avon, Tupperware, and was a lecturer for Weight Watchers.  She earned her real estate license and worked for Rose Realty, Simons & Wagonseller, and Rosier Realty.  In 1981, Barbie and her husband and family moved to Charlotte, NC.  She worked at Charlotte Christian School as a teacher’s aide, headmaster’s secretary, athletic director’s secretary and cheerleading coach. One of Barbie’s greatest joys was her work at Charlotte Christian where she felt privileged to touch the lives of so many including office aids, cheerleaders, athletes, and students. She was always blessed by her lifelong relationships of her many coworkers at CCS.  She treasured the ability to provide a Christian education for her children.   In her later years, Barbie worked as front desk manager for Lake Norman Chrysler Plymouth Dodge and Lorey & Lorey, Inc.

Barbie loved her God and was a very active member of Grace Covenant Church where she volunteered on the Greeter Team, participated in Grace Women’s Ministry, assisted with My Sister’s Closet and was involved in Senior Saints.  Barbie, in her retirement, joined her husband, Richard, in his retirement to support Holy Angels, a ministry for disabled children and adults.  One of Barbie’s favorite parts of retirement was participating in “her husband’s hobby”, Power of the Past Tractor Club.  Her joy was to attend tractor shows and festivals to sell raffle tickets year after year for restored tractors to raise money to provide SNOEZELEN Rooms (sensory rooms) for the Holy Angel residents she so loved.  She also enjoyed reading, collecting quotes and stories, and spending time with family and friends.  Her “Grands” were the joy of her life.  She was passionate about family reunions and was the orchestrator and photographer of most of them. Her children and their spouses were her real treats.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 54 years and the love of her life, Richard Paul Lorey, her son Richard Jeffrey Lorey (Beth), her daughters Lisa Lorey Breakfield (Steve) and Laura Lorey Fair (Alan), her grandchildren, Anna and Greyson Lorey; Cora, Caylin, HannahLisa, Summer, and Jacob Breakfield; and Scottie, Ava, and Davis Kenley and her step grandchildren Katie, Nathan, and Silas Fair, brothers Joseph F. Macenko (Debbie) and David L. Macenko (Patty), a sister, Becky Macenko Wickham (Stan), Sister-in-Laws Pat Coleman and Pat Macenko.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Barbara’s name to Grace Women or Senior Saints at Grace Covenant Church, 17301 Statesville Road, Cornelius, NC 28031 and Holy Angels, LLC, PO Box 710, Belmont, NC 28012-0710.
