Richard DeVita Obituary

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

July 30, 1963 - August 1, 2019

Richard Anthony DeVita, Jr. of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully at the age of 56 on August 2, 2019 surrounded by his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and friend. Born on July 30, 1963, in Rockville Centre, NY, Rich was the son of Sally Mamer Brown and the late Richard Anthony DeVita, Sr. Rich graduated from Gulf Breeze High School in Gulf Breeze, Florida in 1981 and was a graduate of the Citadel class of 1985. During his time at the Citadel, he was a proud member of the Romeo Company and served as editor of the Brigadier newspaper. He loved his Citadel Bulldog brothers, and Charleston, SC always held a special place in his heart.

Widely respected as an expert in the field of life insurance, Rich enjoyed a successful career with Northwestern Mutual and The Todd Organization. While he served as a member on many professional boards, the close relationships with his friends and family were the most treasured aspects of his life. He will be long remembered for his integrity, his many hobbies, a wonderful sense of humor and his unique ability to captivate any audience.  One thing that Rich loved throughout his entire life was golf; he was a member of Carmel Country Club for over 20 years. During the past year that he was sick, he sorely missed Saturdays on the golf course with his best friends, affectionately known as “The Pizza Group.”

He is survived by the love of his life, Corrie DeVita, his wife of 33 years; his son, Richard Anthony DeVita III (Haley); his daughter, Dr. Julia DeVita Owens (Brooks); his granddaughter, Sophia Rose DeVita; his brother, Mark Hopkins DeVita (Nicolle) and their four children.

Rich wanted to thank all of his friends for the many meals, prayers, cards and support over the past year. He also wanted to thank Dr. Saad Usmani, his team at the Levine Cancer Institute, and all the staff on 4T and 4B at CMC Main for their incredible care.

The funeral will be held at 11 am at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, August 6.
