Mark Whelchel

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

June 26, 1962 - August 12, 2019

It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the death of our beloved son, Mark Edward Whelchel. Mark passed away peacefully at Carolina's Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, on August 12, 2019 at the age of 57.

He was born on June 26, 1962, in Valdese, NC and moved to Charlotte with his family at the age of two. He attended Mecklenburg County Schools and was a graduate of South Mecklenburg High School. A year later, Mark enlisted in the US Army, where he served for almost 16 years. His love for the military led him to receive many honors and to achieve the rank of E-7, Sergeant First Class. After leaving the military, he worked as a carpenter.

Mark was a loving man to all he knew, he had a kind heart and a contagious smile. Growing up, he could be found at the Mountainbrook pool with his dad or playing team sports, especially football. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and following NASCAR.

He is survived by his two sons, Eric Whelchel of Atlanta, GA and Michael Whelchel of Denver, CO; His parents, Walter (Gene) Whelchel and Catherine Whelchel of Charlotte and brother Chris Whelchel (Mitzi) also of Charlotte, as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by an infant brother, William Eric Whelchel; grandparents, Loyd and Marie Whelchel, and Reverend and Mrs. William Bull, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society (in honor of his father), or the American Cancer Society.

A memorial service for Mr. Whelchel will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Waxhaw United Methodist Church, 200 McDonald St, Waxhaw, NC 28173.
