Obituary
Anne Pope Melvin
November 7, 1930 – August 20, 2018
Carolyn Anne Pope Melvin passed away on Monday, August 20, 2018, at her home in
Fort Mill, SC with family by her side, exactly 69 years from the day she wed her high
school sweetheart, Ralph Preston Melvin, Jr. Born November 7, 1930, in Wilmington,
NC, to the late Willis Grover Pope and Bessie Mae Freeman Pope, Anne spent her
early childhood in the Elizabethtown-White Lake area of NC, her middle years at the
Barium Springs Children’s Home following the death of her Mother, then returned to
graduate from Elizabethtown High School. Shortly after marrying Ralph in 1949 they
moved to Fayetteville, where they raised their only son and enjoyed a life filled with
extended family and lasting friendships, but her connection to White Lake remained
steadfast throughout her life. Anne was known for her love of the color orange, which
she displayed in both her home and wardrobe...she adored a good book, feeding the
birds and gardening with Ralph as well as cooking delicious southern meals which
garnered her a reputation for making the “best sweet tea ever.”
"Granny" as she was known to family and friends alike, is survived by her son Ralph
Pope Melvin (Debbie) of Charlotte; two granddaughters: Elizabeth Perkis (Josh) of
Charleston and Jennifer Otten (Hal) of Charlotte; 4 great-grandchildren: Claudia Rose
and Amelia Perkis, Will and Preston Otten; her sister, Eleanor Pope Wilson of Raleigh;
as well as numerous nieces and nephews; she was preceded in death by her husband,
infant sister Nancy Ruth, brother, Robert Willis Pope and Missy, her furry companion of
13 years. The family is especially grateful to the numerous caregivers and companions
who brought joy to Granny in her last years and to whom she also made a lasting
impact.
A Memorial Service will be held in the Charis Room at Forest Hill Church, 7224 Park
Road, Charlotte, NC on Saturday, August 25th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, memorials
may be made to the American Lung Association or to Methodist College, Fayetteville,
